El Archipiélago es un grupo de 19 islas, 13 grandes y 6 pequeñas, y decenas de islotes y rocas que cubren un área de más de 17,000 millas cuadradas. Su punto más cercano al continente está a 600 millas de la costa oeste de Ecuador en América del Sur.
TITULO 2 PROVISIONAL
El gobierno de Ecuador designó parte de Galápagos como santuario de vida silvestre en 1935, y en 1959 el santuario se convirtió en el Parque Nacional Galápagos. En 1978 las islas fueron designadas SITIO DEL PATRIMONIO DE LA HUMANIDAD POR LA UNESCO , y en 1986 se creó la Reserva de Recursos Marinos de Galápagos para proteger las aguas circundantes. La Estación Científica Charles Darwin en la Isla Santa Cruz promueve estudios científicos y protege la vegetación autóctona y la vida animal de Galápagos.
